Neck pain or Cervical Spondylosis is a common condition that can affect people of all ages. It may develop suddenly following an injury or strain, or gradually due to prolonged poor posture, repetitive activities & age-related changes in the cervical spine.
Pain may remain confined to the neck or radiate into the shoulder, arm or hand, when a cervical nerve is irritated or compressed.
Causes & Risk Factors
- •Muscle strain or ligament injury
- •Poor posture
- •Prolonged computer or mobile use
- •Repetitive movements
- •Cervical spondylosis
- •Cervical disc degeneration
- •Cervical disc herniation / slipped disc
- •Facet joint arthritis
- •Cervical nerve-root compression
- •Whiplash or other injuries
Symptoms
- •Aching or sharp pain in the neck
- •Neck stiffness & restricted movement
- •Pain extending to the shoulder or upper back
- •Pain radiating into the arm or hand
- •Tingling or "pins & needles" sensation in the arm or fingers
- •Numbness in the arm or fingers
- •Muscle weakness
- •Headaches associated with neck pain
- •Pain aggravated by prolonged sitting, looking down or certain neck movements
- •Difficulty performing routine activities because of pain
How Neck Pain is Diagnosed?
Accurate diagnosis is important because back pain is a symptom rather than a single disease.
Diagnosis usually begins with a detailed medical history & clinical examination,
Location & nature of the pain
Duration & progression of symptoms
Neck movement & posture
Pain radiating into the shoulder or arm
Numbness, tingling or weakness
Muscle strength, sensation & reflexes
Signs of nerve irritation or compression
Radiological Investigations,
- X-ray
- MRI of the spine
- CT scan of the spine
- Nerve conduction studies / EMG in selected cases
Pathological Investigations,
- Blood tests when infection, inflammatory condition or other systemic disease is suspected.
Treatment Options for Neck Pain
Conservative Treatment
Activity modification – Posture & ergonomic correction
Medications – Anti-inflammatory, analgesic & antispasmodic medicines having good role in acute stage. They reduce inflammation, pain & spasm in the knee, help you to get to the daily routine
Physiotherapy & targeted exercises
Heat or cold therapy
Strengthening & rehabilitation
Interventional Pain Management
If conservative treatment isn't effective, your doctor might suggest you some interventions. These are minimally invasive procedures, to block pain pathways & reduce inflammation. Pain relief typically beginning within a week.
At AREVA, we specialise in advanced interventional pain management for back & spine conditions, using precise, image-guided (CARM-IITV) procedures to target the source of pain, providing relief in back pain without the need for major surgery. Many treatments are performed as day-care procedures, enabling patients to return home the same day & resume normal activities with minimal downtime. Our goal: Precise treatment, faster recovery & lasting improvement in quality of life. Trigger-Point Injections – Trigger-point injections may be used for selected patients whose neck pain arises from myofascial trigger points, muscle spasm or other specific painful structures. Trigger-point injections deliver medication directly into painful, tight areas of muscle to reduce pain & tenderness & improve movement. Cervical Epidural Injection – A cervical epidural injection is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat pain caused by irritation or inflammation of the nerves in the cervical spine. A small amount of medication is carefully delivered into the epidural space around the cervical spinal nerves to reduce inflammation & relieve pain. It is considered for conditions such as cervical radicular pain, cervical slipped or herniated disc, nerve-root inflammation. Radiofrequency Ablation (RF Neurolysis) – It is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat selected patients with chronic neck pain arising from the cervical facet joints. Under real-time imaging guidance, specialised RF needles are precisely positioned near the medial branch nerves that carry pain signals from the affected facet joints. Controlled radiofrequency energy is then used to create a small, targeted lesion on these nerves, reducing the transmission of pain signals from the painful joints. It provides longer-lasting relief in appropriately selected patients. At AREVA, At AREVA, we provide personalized evaluation and treatment for neck pain arising from cervical disc problems, nerve irritation, facet joint disorders and muscular conditions. Depending on the underlying cause, treatment may include medication, physiotherapy, rehabilitation and image-guided procedures such as cervical epidural injections, selective nerve-root blocks, cervical facet joint injections, medial branch blocks, radiofrequency ablation and targeted trigger-point injections. Our goal is to relieve pain, improve neck mobility and restore daily function through appropriate, minimally invasive treatment options while avoiding unnecessary surgery whenever possible.
